International Projects
International Projects
A cornerstone of Rotary International is to increase international understanding through philanthropy to developing nations, international affiliations between clubs, and many opportunities for international travel and student or work exchange between Rotary Clubs.
Rotary is more than just international philanthropy. It offers opportunities to meet Rotarians from around the world at our weekly meetings, attend meetings at any of Rotary's 32,000 clubs worldwide, and opportunities for scholars to travel or study abroad and be advised or hosted by Rotarians and their families.
International Club Projects
The Boston Rotary Club #7 has collaborated on several international projects that our club members are passionate about:
Wellness, Inc. www.alphabetfitness.org The Alphabet Fitnessâ project is focused on getting the developing child’s body ready for language learning and literacy. By turning literacy into more of a sport, Alphabet Fitnessâ playfully facilitates many Rotary Clubs that have existing language and literacy programs.
Romanian Children’s Relief www.rcr.org 1) RCR’s literacy program trains volunteers to provide weekly home visits and activities for children in foster care and hospitals in Romania. 2) RCR’s physical therapy program provides equipment to mitigate the developmental delays in young children who are receiving intensive therapy delivered in a recuperative center and in the child’s home.
My Sister’s Keeper www.mskeeper.org This organization lends assistance to communities of woman in various locations throughout the world. At present, their focus is on supporting the aspirations of woman in the new African country of South Sudan.
Village Help for South Sudan www.villagehelpforsouthsudan.org This group provides assistance to developing schools and health clinics in small villages in the new African country of South Sudan.
Romania Literacy Program
The Inocenti Early Literacy Program brings trained volunteers into the homes of handicapped, abandoned and foster children in order to strengthen their early language and literacy skills, and enhance parent-child interactions. The Inocenti psychologists who run the program are responsible for recruiting, training and supervising approximately fifty local volunteers annually using a specially-designed curriculum of books and activities developed by two reading specialists from the United States. The program has been successfully serving the young people of Bistrita County for six years. In order to extend the Inocenti Early Literacy Program to additional communities, we are seeking funding to provide books and supplies for those children in need.
Romania Physical Therapy Program
There are over 1,300 disabled children living in Bistrita, 830 of which suffer with a physically or mentally limiting handicap. The Inocenti Physical Therapy Program is aimed at mitigating developmental delays in young children by providing intensive physical therapy delivered in a recuperative center and in their homes. Our project seeks to provide the child's caretaker with physical therapy equipment to allow them to continue treatment between therapists' visits.
PolioPlus, the most ambitious program in Rotary's history, is the volunteer arm of the global partnership dedicated to eradicating polio. For more than 20 years, Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease. Today, PolioPlus and its role in the initiative is recognized worldwide as a model of public-private cooperation in pursuit of a humanitarian goal.
In addition to providing financial and volunteer support, Rotary works to urge support from other public and private sector partners. This includes the campaign to End Polio Now, inspired by the extraordinary challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
